Private Pay
Therapy Cost Without Insurance
Why “Out-of-Network” doesn’t have to mean “Out of Reach.”
The Relatable Reality:
Why Insurance Isn’t Always the Answer to Therapy Costs
Health insurance often feels like a contradiction in action; ironically, it works best for those who don’t need to use it. From high-deductible plans to limited coverage to plans that pay a minor portion and leave you with the hefty difference, insurance can create more problems than solutions. This is especially true when it comes to therapy costs.
Some plans minimize benefits, refuse to pay for certain treatments, and control how care is provided; others have a limited number of therapists and psychiatrists in network… and they each have six-month waitlists, lack specialized experience, or practice an hour from your house.
All of this creates a conundrum for those seeking mental health treatment while considering therapy costs: Treatment becomes more about the “network fit” and less about the “right fit.” This can be detrimental to anyone, but it’s especially harmful to those who need a specialist who understands their unique journey and has the expertise to provide the required services.
At Eirene, our goal is to provide equitable care. We believe that the therapy cost should be an investment in yourself, a point of potential rather than a source of stress.
One Life, One Heart, One Mind:
Why You Deserve Care Now
Putting off mental health care is easy when your insurance is lacking (or nonexistent). You might talk yourself into postponing appointments until you have a better job, better benefits, and a better-balanced bank account. But the cost of waiting can be pricey! Your wellness isn’t something you can put on a shelf and only take down when it’s convenient.
Mental health is like your shadow: It follows you everywhere. This makes therapy an investment in your present and future. Neglecting your mind doesn’t mean your challenges go away; rather, they get even more disruptive, interfering with relationships, career, physical health, sense of self, sleep, and more. You only have one life, one heart, and one mind; you deserve a chance to prioritize your well-being, protect your peace, and see yourself thrive.
At Eirene, we’ve built our practice on the concept of healing as a necessity rather than a luxury. We’ve reimagined therapy costs to make care accessible for people from all walks of life.
Rethinking Therapy Cost
Many insurance plans come with a deductible dilemma: They pay nothing until you pay enough. Some high-deductible plans won’t pay for any kind of therapy until you meet your deductible (which, naturally, you may hit in December, only to see it reset and start over the first of January). High-deductible plans vary in how high they truly are; some have $5,000 deductibles, others have $10,000. Some deductibles are so high that people are unlikely to meet them unless they undergo surgery or visit the ER. By choosing private pay, you control where your dollars go.
Private pay also comes with privacy. There is no reporting to insurance companies, no diagnosis mandate, and no permanent medical record. Insurance companies can’t audit your sessions or tell your provider how to treat you.

We can also help mitigate costs by offering a super bill for out-of-network reimbursement (for those with PPOs, this may be applicable depending on plan) and reminding our clients to take advantage of their HSA/FSA, which can reduce therapy costs by 20-30%.
